Local Organizations
A little more about the programs and organizations we are working with:
First Intervention Ghana
First Intervention Ghana is a registered non-governmental organization based in Cape Coast, established in 2009. Our core mandate is to facilitate volunteer and internship programs for students in the medical, teaching, social work, and sports sectors.
In addition to placements, we implement rural medical outreach programs, public health and school outreach initiatives, including menstrual hygiene education for young girls, oral hygiene education, basic first aid training for schools, and first aid capacity-building for Ghanaian workers and community members.
Brafie NGO
"Brafie Nsoroma Foundation is a community-based non-governmental organization committed to improving the lives of vulnerable and marginalized people. We exist to restore dignity, create opportunity, and serve as a bridge of hope for those who are often forgotten.
Our work includes providing direct support to vulnerable individuals at the leprosy camp, offering medical funding assistance for infants and children with critical health conditions whose families cannot afford treatment, and responding to urgent humanitarian needs within our communities.
The Foundation also runs the Soccer Pitch Reading Program, using sports as a tool to promote literacy, discipline, and positive social values among children and young people.
At Brafie Nsoroma Foundation, we believe sustainable change happens when compassion meets action, and when vulnerable people are empowered to shape their own future."
AliRoyals Surf & Soccer Program
Coach Ali is the founder of the AliRoyals Surf & Soccer program and is the head coach of the Ebuswa Dwarfs, the local professional soccer team.
During the week, Coach Ali manages three youth soccer programs: under-10 boys, under-13 boys, and under-16 girls. He provides housing and food for 10 of the girls on the under-16 team. Girls are discouraged from playing soccer in Ghana. He offers them an opportunity to be a part of a team, build discipline, attend school, and have an outlet for fun.
On the weekend, he travels to Anomabo, a local fishing village, to hold surf therapy sessions for the children of the village. During both his youth soccer and surf programs, Coach Ali provides snacks and drinks for the children with his own money. For some of the children in these programs, this is a rare luxury. One of the best things to hear at these programs is the chanting of “Ali Royals” and “Caring for Life”! #Caring4Life
Bernajis Public Health Outreach
Bernard is a nurse on the infectious disease ward at Cape Coast Teaching Hospital. Through his organization, Bernajis, he sponsors free community education programs on topics like blood pressure and diabetes management, stroke and cardiac arrest prevention. In a country where health literacy and access to preventative health are extremely low, Bernajis is an extremely beneficial community program. Bernard is also the author of a few books and has had a vital role in our medical supply donations.
Cape Coast Teaching Hospital
When I volunteered in Cape Coast in 2019, I worked as a nursing student, helping get vital signs and other basic nursing aid work on the units. During my time on the medical ward, I watched a man die who would’ve never died if he had been receiving care in other countries. There were two male patients who both needed oxygen. At the time, there was no central wall oxygen, and they had one oxygen tank. The medical staff had to make the difficult decision of who needed the oxygen more.
The man who had not been receiving oxygen was steadily declining. Eventually, they switched the oxygen to him, but it was too late. He went into respiratory arrest and died. I will always remember that horrific situation, and in honor of that man who died, I vowed to donate life-saving equipment to the hospital whenever I could.
When we traveled in January, we brought 200+ pieces of life-saving medical equipment thanks to the generous donations of family and friends. For this trip, we have identified additional needs and have created another Amazon registry link for those interested in donating medical equipment.
