About

We are raising funds to provide reliable food, clean water, education opportunities, and essential medical care to underserved communities in Cape Coast, Ghana.

In August 2026, I will be returning to Cape Coast to support several health, food-security, and education initiatives in a community I've been connected with for many years.

Mission

For those of you who do not know me, my name is Mary Kate Gibbons King. I am a registered nurse with experience working in adult and pediatric emergency medicine.

My journey with Cape Coast began as a nursing student through an organization called Projects Abroad in December 2018. I worked alongside dedicated clinicians at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital and served residents of the Ankaful Leprosy Community.

During that time, I formed many meaningful relationships, especially with my friend Eric, a local pastor and social worker who supports his community every day through his multiple NGOs like First Intervention Ghana.

The kindness, generosity, and spirituality of the people I met while working in Cape Coast had a lasting impact on me. In addition to the friendly people, the poverty and lack of community resources also left a lasting impression on me.

Since my first visit to Ghana, I have felt a strong connection to this community. Over the years, through the support of family and friends, I have organized multiple aid initiatives for this community. These include, fixing a well to provide consistent access to safe drinking water for the Ankaful Leprosy Community, raising funds to provide essential medical equipment to nearby hospitals and clinic, and sponsoring surgeries in unique emergent situations.

In January 2026, I returned to Cape Coast with aims to build sustainable solutions in these areas while also partnering with local organizations serving marginalized populations within the greater Cape Coast Community.

In January 2026, I returned to Cape Coast with aims to build sustainable solutions in these areas while also partnering with local organizations serving marginalized populations within the greater Cape Coast Community. A few things we initiated and supported during this most recent trip:

  • Purchasing a corn mill and investing in the training and supplies for community members to sell and provide corn dough for the Ankaful Leprosy Community.

  • Initiated a micro lending program for entrepreneurial community members within the Ankaful Leprosy Community.

  • Donated urgent medical supplies to the leprosy community and painted their community center.

  • Donated life-saving medical equipment to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

  • Made multiple donations to the AliRoyals Surf and Soccer Program.

  • Provided First Aid education and donated First Aid kits to local schools.

More details regarding the work we did in our January 2026 trip can be found in our impact report.

The extent of our impact during our last trip was astonishing. While the amount of lives we were able to change for the better exceeded expectations, there were still so many needs identified. Which is why I am returning to Ghana this August with my husband and brother to follow-up on our ongoing initiatives and bring more support to the local organizations that are working tirelessly to help improve their community with their limited resources.

First Trip to Ghana

2023

Decision to Get More Involved

After raising money to help a young man in need of emergent surgery, I learned from my friend Eric about the disheartening conditions of members within the leprosy community.

Returning to Ghana

My husband and I returned to Ghana by ourselves, through no organization, reuniting with friends in Cape Coast. We sponsored incredible projects in marginalized communities, progressing towards sustainable access to food in the Ankaful Community,  and donated over $2,000 worth of medical supplies to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital. We created incredible impact due to the support from our family and friends in the U.S. and in Ghana.

2024

Securing Clean Water

With the support of family, we were able to restore the communities borehole, creating reliable access to clean water. The community members organized a way to sustain their own maintenance of the well.
